SCAQMD Air Alert

South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. During times of high temperatures, the air quality index is likely to reach the level of Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy, due to predominant summertime pollutant. Unhealthy level of air quality index ranges from 151 to 200 and Very Unhealthy level of air quality index ranges from 201 to 300. When air quality reaches to those levels, we may begin to experience adverse to serious health effects. SCAQMD

Ozone air pollution can cause some health effects such as:

  • Irritation to the respiratory system
  • Reduce lung function
  • Inflame and damage cells that line the lungs
  • Aggravate asthma and other chronic lung diseases

Please consider the following measures during hot weather months to avoid health effects from occuring:

  • Limit outdoor activity when the air quality index forecast is unhealthy
  • Use public transportation, carpool, or reduce driving to help reduce ozone pollution
  • Set your thermostat a littler higher in the summer to conserve energy
